La vanatoare in 2005 / Hunting in 2005

Marea majoritatea masinilor prezentate aici au disparut in urmatoarele 12 luni.

I've already presented photos from 2002-3 with old cars seen in Romania (here and here). It's now time to wind the clock forward a little, to the summer of 2005. I had my first digital camera and snapped what seemed interesting: cars which were about to disappear off the roads. Most of the cars below were, indeed, no longer there a year later.
Dacia 1300 si Skoda S100, Piatra Neamt. Incredibil, Skoda inca exista in stare foarte buna.

Opel, zona Viilor, Bucuresti

Moskvich, Piatra Neamt. Disparut in 2006.

Volkswagen, zona Aurel Vlaicu, Bucuresti. Ma intreb daca e o fosta masina de militie.

SR, Constanta. Langa ea era o Dacie 1302. Inca mi-e ciuda ca n-am fotografiat-o.

Moskvich, Piatra Neamt. Masina nu circulase din 1981. In August 2005 a ajuns la fier vechi.

Dacia 1100, Piatra Neamt. Disparuta in 2006.

Volga taxi, Piatra Neamt. Vanduta cu 4 milioane jumate. .

Fiat 1500, Piatra Neamt, in stare groaznica, in ultimul an de viata.

2x Lancia Trevi in Bucuresti. O masina aproape uitata. In anii 80, circula una in judetul Neamt cu numere 12-NT-xxx.

VW perfect conservat, zona Viilor, Bucuresti

VW 1600, an 1968, Piatra Neamt. Era unul din 2 in oras.

R16, str Ion Ghica, Bucuresti, inca in stare buna si folosit zilnic.

BMW seria 3 in stare de epava, Bucuresti

Dacia 1300, 1971, Piatra Neamt. O masina in stare perfecta care astazi, dupa moartea proprietarului, zace ruginita si abandonata.

Dacia 1300, Piatra Neamt.

Volga M21, Constanta.

Volga M24, Piatra Neamt. Masina in stare buna si relativ originala. Din pacate a disparut in 2006.

Dacia 1300 F Autofurgoneta / Dacia 1300 F Van

In the second (1978) edition of the book "Dacia 1300" written by A Brebenel, C Mondiru and I Farcasu, there are references to the Dacia 1300 F van. This differs from the estate version in three respects: the lack of rear seats, the partition between the front and the rear, and the painted rear windows.

There is very little info around on this model, although the Mondiru book contains blueprints. Anyway, there are no photos in existence - or so I thought until seeing this postcard of the Athenee Palace Hotel in Bucharest. It's difficult to date, but the presence of a Skoda 105, the yellow licence plates and the lack of Dacia 1310s points to the period 1978 - 1983.

De 1 Decembrie... / On 1 December...

... a wonderful photo, from 1909, at the Peles Castle. The real golden age of Romania!

Benzinariile PECO in anii 70 / PECO filling stations in the 70s

"Peco" is a Communist term still in regular use in Romania. Even though, for years, cars have been filled up at petrol stations with very different brand names, the generic for them is still Peco, which was the firm that ran all the filling stations in Communist Romania. And they had their own charm...

Produsele fabricii Astra, 1921 / Products of the Astra factory, 1921

Anul 1930 era anul de glorie pentru circulatia autovehiculelor construite in Romania - 109 in total.

In 1921 Bucharest held a fair showcasing Romanian industry; and recently, the Romanian national archives published a wonderful set of images from the event. We see General Averescu and King Ferdinand in their cars (photos 4, 5); and, more importantly, we see some very rare images of the products of the Astra factory in Arad.

I wrote in 2010 about Astra and its products; picture 6 shows an ad from 1925. Unfortunately, further details are scant. By the 1930s, automotive production had stopped, and the ad in picture 7 shows only railway produce being made. 1930 itself was the high point of Romanian-made vehicles on the road, with a grand total of 109 - I assume the vast majority of which were those made in Arad.

Renault-uri la manastirea Secu / Renaults at the Secu monastery

O marca cu o lunga istorie in Romania...

A marque with a long history in Romania. August 1928; a group of well-off young people travel into the countryside of Neamt, flanked by two Renaults from the mid 1920s. These cars, with the radiator behind the engine and an instantly recognisable front end, were popular at the time. In Romania, one 1920s model - a Monasix from 1928 - still exists, in Craiova.

Proprietarul a disparut in ceata istoriei...
From 1949 - a turbulent time in Romania's history - a circulation permit for a Peugeot bicycle. Interestingly, this document was conceived for animal-drawn vehicles - carts and carriages.

From the chassis number, this is almost definitely a bicycle produced in 1940 (March or April). The other possibilities are 1932 or 1921.

The owner has disappeared into the mists of history.

Inter-war Romania had not one, but two, Mercedes 540K Special Roadsters...

These cars - of which only 58 were built - were the top of the Mercedes-Benz range, with an enormous body but only two seats.

This one was captured by the photographer Willy Pragher in October 1939, on the boulevard Bratianu in Bucharest. I'm not sure whose it was; one possible name is Nae Ionescu (the Romanian version of Lord Beaverbrook), who had a sporting, black, two-seater Mercedes with a red leather interior.

Importantly, this is_not_ King Michael's Mercedes. That was also a Special Roadster but with different bodywork, a 5-speed gearbox, a radio, and royal licence plates. But it's interesting that of the six Special Roadsters built with the spare wheel inside the bodywork, two ended up in Romania.

I've no idea what happened to 24-B. The history of King Michael's car is relatively straightforward - between 1948 and 1960, it made its way east, was on sale in spring 1960 in Kiev, and eventually came West again, after lengthy spells in Astrakhan and Moscow.

I heard that in 1962/63, there was a Mercedes convertible in the town of Rasnov. It was a black two-seater, with a red leather interior, and a "compressor". The locals at the time said it was the ex-King's - incorrect, because the royal car, with its unique bodywork, was already in the USSR. But I suppose it could be this one, 24-B...
